When Access Changes Everything

Ten years ago, a simple but urgent concern changed the course of Verna’s life. A friend noticed swelling on Verna’s neck and encouraged her to have it checked. At 55 years old and without health insurance, Verna did not know where to turn. She was worried, uncertain, and unsure how she would access care. That same friend told her about Malta House of Care.
Verna made an appointment—and she has never looked back.
Since that first visit, Malta has become her medical home. Over the past decade, she has received consistent, relationship-based primary care and support through some of life’s most difficult moments. Guided by Malta’s providers and staff, Verna underwent two surgeries and today is a two-time cancer survivor.
Through it all, she says, Malta provided more than medical treatment. It offered reassurance, advocacy, and dignity. “I would not be alive without Malta House of Care’s level of care, compassion, and guidance,” Verna shares. “Malta is my guiding post.”
For patients like Verna, access to care is not just about appointments or prescriptions—it is about having a trusted place to turn when uncertainty strikes. It is about being treated with respect, being guided through complex medical decisions, and knowing that someone is walking alongside you every step of the way.
Verna’s story is one of survival—and it is also a testament to what compassionate, consistent primary care can make possible.
