For over two decades, Malta House of Care has stood as a beacon of hope and healing in Greater Hartford, transforming lives through free, compassionate healthcare while championing equity for our diverse community.

The Beginnings
In 2004, a visionary group of Hartford-area community leaders, inspired by the Order of Malta’s mission to serve the sick and poor, came together to address the stark disparities in healthcare access and quality throughout Greater Hartford. Their resolve laid the foundation for Malta House of Care.
That same year, a State Office of Health Care Access survey revealed that 5.8% of respondents were uninsured at the time and 9.4% had experienced a lapse in coverage during the previous year. Nearly 20 years later, these challenges persist: 5% of Connecticut adults remain uninsured, with Hartford’s rate at an estimated 9%.
The health disparities Malta board leadership identified 20 years ago remain in Hartford and across the state.
Opening Our Doors
On July 9, 2006, Malta House of Care welcomed its first patients to St. Peter’s Church in Hartford, providing 477 free patient visits by year’s end. Today, our commitment endures—our dedicated clinicians provided 4,366 healthcare visits to approximately 1,300 uninsured residents in 2024. With our fully equipped 40-foot Mobile Healthcare Clinic and our Stationary Clinic in the Asylum Hill neighborhood, we ensure essential care reaches those who need it most.
Serving More
In September 2022, Malta House of Care opened a new-state-of-the-art stationary outpatient clinic at 136 Farmington Avenue in the Asylum Hill neighborhood of Hartford. With five examination rooms and a spacious waiting are, Malta provides dignified care to patients.
